Hiram the Hiker

Hiram stood sentinel at Shaw’s Hiker Hostel in Monson during the 1970s and 1980s. He is a symbol of the role the Appalachian Trail has played in the culture and identity of the Town of Monson. There’s a “tall tale” that he lost his hand in an encounter with a bear, but was determined to keep hiking nonetheless—an inspiration to all!
